JD 332 stalls when put into gear

My JD 332 starts fine and the engine runs fine. As soon as I move from neutral to either forward or reverse it stalls imediately. Also if I keep it in neutral and turn on the lawn cutting blades it stalls imediately. If I put it back into neutral it will start again, but stalls every time after I take it out of neutral. I refilled the gas tank (which was not empty) but this has not helped. Can anyone help me with what the problem may be?
