Brian, You and ejr are both exactly right. You must remove the two screws that hold the distributor cap clips and you must remove the c-clip that you noticed. You must also remove the vacuum advance diaphram. It is held in with one little screw right on the top of the diaphram. Be careful when you put it back in not to over-tighten it. The vacuum advance diaphram canister is pot metal. Good luck, Tom in TN PS. I recently overhauled my distributor and found two loose screws in the bottom of it. I've had the tractor for eight years and I didn't drop them into there.
