They're not too uncommon. Both Ford and Ferguson made them.
I saw a couple of them go on ebay this year.
I was told they were used in stony, rooty soil that would cause a moldboard plow to get hung up.
These will jump up and over the obstacle and keep on rolling.
I don't think they will dig as deep as a moldboard plow will. A moldboard plow will kind of knife itself into the ground if it is set right. They set up easy though. I have one - a Dearborn 10-80.
I used it this fall to turn over a plot for a friend of mine. Kind of got me mad though as it sits real close behind the tractor and when I raised it it swung over and bent my fender.
