The story behind "battleship gray" as I recall, was that the Navy had purchased a tremendous amount of gray paint and then decided that it was the wrong shade. The Navy made a verbal deal with someone at Ford to unload the paint at an agreed upon price and delivered it to Ford only to have old Henry call the deal off after it was unloaded. They finally agreed upon a ridiculously low price for it and Ford proceeded to paint their 9N and 2N tractors with it.
