Shouldn't need to do this after just running the engine.

The second time there was a fault of some sort in the electrical system. Check to see if your battery is getting a charge. Is the timing a little fast and firing before TDC. This can be caused by a sticking ignition advance. First thing I would look for is a connection heating in the starting circuit. This will indicate a poor connection and is most likely your problem.
