If the battery cables get warm and start smoking, it is because of loose, dirty, or corroded connections. Take the connections loose and wire brush the crud away, or use your pocket knife and scrape it away. do this with the battery posts, and all the other connections, and then re-install and tighten thoroughly. CLEAN, BRIGHT, AND TIGHT is the name of the game.
