I would like to pose a question based on a situation I am in the middle of. To the best of my recollection Allan in Neb. is mainly a hayer,but do to his many posts and his recent project of his "old" Gleaner. I wanted to see what the rest of you would do,if money were no object? My family farms a couple hundred acres in Iowa,mainly for the production of row crops,dedicated to the seed side of the industry.On the farm are many tractors, my uncle being what I believed a "practical" man, ran the equipment that met his needs, and he could afford.He has scarcely added any equipment in the past twenty five years short of a "new,used Case combine" in 2005.There are many Case and Farmalls doing idle jobs,mixers,brushhog work,running elevators and such. The main field tractors are a 82 Case 2090, and a 81 IH 1086. Of the two the 1086 is used the most. Just a few weeks ago My uncle purchases a Ford 8770 FWA to help with field chores,yet my cousin says it will only be used limitedly. He intends to used the 1086 for most of the field prep. I cannot see making such an investment, other then tax gain and not use it. But, it poses an interesting question, if not for the investment of the machinery "only", would someone like Allan get more modern equipment such as a JD4890 windrower with a 20' cutting platform. This cuts and windrows with one machine.Wouldnt a machine like this make Allan more profitable,with less fuel use,field time and better overall hay quality?Please understand "I am not" being brand specific nor am I questioning how Allan runs his operation, I am simply asking if you could have a machine that made your operation more profitable, barring equip. investment would you get it? I love old machines fellas, I truly do, so please no bashing... I have some old ones of my own.
