I thought most (all)of the GM alts, at least what they call the 10SI series(3wire) had built in regulators. That's what the "SI" stood for. I guess some folks leave the old regulator on but the wires going to it might not be wired into the charging system.
I believe the one wire alternators are 10SI units that are changed internally so that they are self exciting. Most tractors have to be rev'ed up pretty good to make them start charging. Once that is done they will still charge even at idle until the engine is shut down.
I personally like the 3 wire which is in reality only a '2 wire'.One to excite and the larger terminal to the battery circuit.
For a 1 wire use the smallest pulley possible to make the alt spin as fast as is practical.
