The voltage regulator shouldn't cause the tractor to suddenly stop. Don't know offhand the resistance of the ballast resistor. New ones can be had at your local autoparts store. I think it was RED that posted a NAPA part # for one a few weeks/months ago...you might check through the post archives on the Farmall board to see if you can find it. I had a problem once with my M doing this that turned out to be the switch. Try pulling the secondary wire from the coil out of the distributor and cranking the engine a little while the end of it is close (1/4" or so) to the block. See if you get a spark from this, If not, then check to see if you have power to the screw where the primary wire connects to the base of the distributor. With the distributor cap off, bump the starter to where the points are closed. Then pull out the ignition switch and see if the ammeter shows any movement. If not, it's likely the points aren't making a good connection. Double check to see that they are CLEAN, not just look clean, but ARE clean, as a very thin film of grease (doesn't take a lot more than a fingerprint) can lower the conductivity. These things can be maddening to find.
