You've got it right...if you think about it! Draw a picture of the tracks you made in the snow, and then compare it to the tracks the lugs make in soft earth. Very similar! Your heels hit the ground first, and in the center of your path. Likewise....most tires on tractors are mounted so the center of the lugs meets the ground before the outer ends of the lugs. This allows the tire to "clean" itself instead of filling full of dirt in conditions of marginal traction. When mounted on a "ground driven" implement, such as some older manure spreaders, the direction is reversed, maximizing the traction from ground to wheel. It does make a difference. Lug designs and depth vary according to application, tire type (radial or bias ply) and manufacturer's design patents. The old "closed center" treads are used today mostly for nostalgia's sake.
