They would have to draw a bead and shoot first. The Sherman's armor was no match for the the German guns. The Sherman's main role was infantry support knocking out machine gun nests. It was relativly small (to fit on ships) and produced in large numbers. It was never intended to slug it out with Tigers. The German tanks were in most respects superior but they were complex and prone to breakdown and produced in much smaller numbers than the German army needed. The Germans also would have had a hard time feeding very many more tanks than they had. The allies best weapon against German tanks was the airplane ie Republic P 47's and Hawker Typhoon/Tempests. Allied air superiority made life difficult (and short) for German tankers.
