I have a "51 M and the front wheels wobble when on the highway in 5th gear. There is about 1/8 of a turn of play when you turn the steering wheel until it engages with the steering column. I think if have narrowed down where the play is. It is between the gear that engages over the spline of the steering column and the steering column itself. The spline on the top of the column is tapered and there is a matching taper on the gear. It just seems as if the gear won"t go down on the spline far enough to make a tight connection, but I don"t see anyway the gear could go any lower - it is already against the bolster housing.
My question is, Is there a way to raise the steering columm further up in the bolster? It seems that it would then engage the gear fully. I haven"t had the upper or lower bolster off yet and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if such an adjustment is possible. Or do I just have worn parts?
