It is easier with the tree attached... However this is what i do. Attach a winch( i use a 1.5 ton winch with a 5 ton strap) to the stump and pull. then get a hose or powerwasher and start washing away the roots. This causes and awful mess but it is the summer and it is hot and playing in mud can be fun... Then cut the main roots and keep pulling. The pulling will stress the roots making it easy to cut. This takes some time to do.... Now if you do not have time go get some bags of ammonium nitrate (fertilizer) wait for a nice day...load the bags around the stump...soak the bags in diesel fuel....stick a M80 or 3 in with a LONG LONG fuse...light and run...this is the poor mans dynamite....
