If it's gonna sit for days, at least shutting the fuel off is a good idea. The carb float valve could stick open or leak and then the engine might "hydraulic" which can get really expensive. This is rare but it does happen. If it's gonna sit for weeks or months, then also running it dry is a good idea because that drains the bowl and there's less gas to eventually gum things up. A fuel stabilizer like Sta Bil is a good idea too.
