The bigger issue is that you should have a spacer that moves the drive out the same amount as the adapter. I have seen these, they do exist...somewhere. If you go the other way (small pto on tractor/large spline on gearbox), there is a simple 'shell' that goes on the PTO and doesn't make it longer, so you don't need the spacer on the outside.
