i'm assuming that this is tempory fencing so... Might i suggest that you try polywire, its plastic cord with stainless steel wire interwoven to carry the voltage. very lightweight so you'll need less post (unless you have heavy iceing weather) i use fiberglass post for temp. fences. as stated, the ground is 1/2 of the circuit. some people run odd numbers of wire and make every other wire grounded. that way when the animal pokes his head through the wire, he is in direct contact with ground and a live wire. this is necessary if your soil is too dry to act as a conductor for ground side voltage. check fence often. if it fails and the cows find out about it, its all over. like other have stated they could wreck your solar charger. mine will sometimes pull the wires from the battery. i use to think they were organizing excapes and had one cow that held a NEC certificate. I've got two Par-Mak 6V solars that have lasted over 25 years both had to have battery replacements two years ago. for perimeter fencing i like the Gaugher brand (SP).
