When Nancy and I arrived at the farm Friday night there was a small plastic sack near the gate.
I picked up the small sack and handed it to Nancy.
Later Friday evening, Nancy told me the small plastic sack contained the 2010 census from the U.S. Department of Commerce.
After Nancy read the census form, she asked me to read it.
Since this is an official form, I decided to Start here and carefully read the instructions.
The Census Burea also conducts counts in institutions and other places, so:
Do not count anyone living away either at college or in the Armed Forces.
Do not count anyone in a nursing home, jail, prison, detention facility, etc. on April 1, 2010.
Leave these people off your form even if they will return to live here after they leave college, the nursing home, the military, jail, etc. Otherwise they may be counted twice.
Comfortable with the clarity of the instructions, I began to read through the 10 questions.
Question #1 How many people were living or staying in this house, apartment, mobile home on April 1, 2010?
Me being a card-carrying redneck from NE Texas, I clearly understand the meaning of the term “staying” somewhere as opposed to “living” somewhere.
Wonder how many folks know what “stays” even means?
After I started uttering a couple of redneck expletives, Nancy started laughing and couldn’t stop.
Distracted by her laughter, I continued to read through the questions.
Question #5 Please provide information for each person living here. Start with a person living here who owns this house, apartment, or mobile home. If the owner or renter lives somewhere else, start with any adult living here. This will be person 1. What is Person 1’s name?
No problem here, just identify and print Person 1’s name.
Learned something new on Question #9. Under the check box for Other Asian, it listed Pakistani. I didn’t know Pakistan was in Asia.
Also under Question #9, it listed White. Why not White, Anglo Am., or Caucasian?
After another couple of different redneck expletives, Nancy still laughing from Question #1, is now in tears.
Thankful that this 10 minute survey is almost over, I finally realize that someone at the Census Bureau has a sense of humor.
Question #10 Does Person #1 live or stay somewhere else?
There’s that word “stay” again that’s gonna raise the hair on somebody’s neck.
Under the Yes check box, you must mark all that apply.
Some of these choices include:
In college housing
In the military
In jail or prison
In a nursing home
Did I read the instructions wrong?

Nancy is laughing so hard she's crying and I'm confused as hell.
After a couple of days rest, clearer thinking is setting in but still confused.
