Nomad- I don't think this site ever claimed to be non-commercial. They sell products and advertising space, but provide the forums at no charge for noncommercial use; maybe that is where you are confused. I think your "friend's" offense may have been that he was soliciting business or promoting or linking to same. The other possibility could be that he made some truly offensive comment deemed unacceptable by the site's owners.
