I manage the lake at our sportsmans club - some members donated an aerator cause they wanted to see the water squirting in the air. It was nothing but trouble, finally I made a little presentation to the effect its much cheaper to buy a few fish than to throw money at that thing. Fact we have never had a fish kill in the 10 yrs I have been doing it so its a safe bet. If you must have some O2 in the lake an airpump on shore/difuser plate in the lake is the only way to go.
