Use a HD diesel oil formulated for pre 2007 diesels. Gasoline oil and emission diesel oil doesn't have the extreme wear additives to protect the lifter/cam. A larger oil filter operates with less oil passing through the internal relief valve. Thus less or no un-filtered passing through the engine. Here is a Wix with much more filter area and finer filter media. Wix 51515R . It's 5.2 inches long instead of the little muffin sized twerp the parts book calls for.
