Starting old European diesels

A member of our tractor club recently brought in four antique tractors from Europe. At the last meeting he started up his 50hp Landini by directing a propane torch at the cast-iron bulb in the front of the tractor. This raise questions in my mind. Question 1 - I know that some tractors like the Lanz Bulldog were started using ignition papers. Were these special papers or could any old newspaper or paper sack be used? Question 2 - Later models of the Lanz were started using cartridges. Were these cartridges like shotgun shells without pellets? Where did you get them? What is used now? (OK, there's a bunch of questions here). Question 3 - Other than using a blowtorch, ignition papers or cartridges, were other means of starting old diesels used?
