exhaust valve color

I am still working on my Wisconsin VF4D engine. I have been concerned that I have one cyl running too hot, but now think I might have it fixed. One reason that I think it may be too hot is that the exhaust valve is white while the other cyl exhaust valves are black. Any advice on what color a exhaust valve ought to be??
