OT: Ford F 150 Perculates

I need some help figuring out what is going on with my truck. It is an '89 F-150 with a 300 6 cyl. When I pull my trailer the temp. gauge will go 1/2 way to 3/4 of the way to Hot. Normally it runs 1/4 of the way up. After awhile the temp. returns to normal. This process will repeat itself at random. It occurs more often with the air conditioner on, but will also occur with the A/C off. I have tried different thermostats and I even took the thermostat out, no difference. When I shut the truck off with the temp. gauge 1/2 to 3/4 way to hot (not hot, but getting there) the truck will perculate like a coffee pot. I can watch the water circulate in the radiator. I have flushed the radiator. I have cleaned the outside of the radiator. This morning I put a thermostat back in for winter. Afterward I ran the truck to check for leaks. While it was running I noticed the heater hoses got hot but the upper and lower radiator hoses remained cool. The heater hoses stayed hot on A/C, heat, and off. Could the heater core be plugged and the top stay hot while the engine runs cool? I'm at a loss. Can anyone help? Thanks for the time.
