Like others have said: Tell him what you told us. I'm sure that he will be happy for you and no one can fault a man for bettering himself!

Also - since he's your friend - let him know of your plans early so he can plan for it - no one like surprises. Hey, I bet if the new job doesn't work out he'll want you back an will even meet the new jobs salary and benefits! Good workers are hard to find!
