The starter for my JD 1010 is not working well. When I turn the key, the starter turns, but often doesn't engage with the flywheel. I just get whinning noise and the engine doen't start. If I keep trying it eventually starts, but the problem is only getting worse. A friend told me that it may just need a new bendex? I don't know if the spelling is right. It sounds like it is a spring that should push a gear on the starter out where it will turn the flywheel. I've never worked on a starter, but was wondering if this is a repair I could make. Replacing the starter is about $120, and I can do it if necessary, but I'd rather repair it if its possible. Thanks for any assistance.
