the wire you refer to is the distributor-coil wire. It leads out the top of the coil and over to the distributor. When the points "open" they break the current flowing through the primary winding of the coil (the part between the + and - terminals), then the charge in the primary winding seeks a ground. The only ground available is the spark plug, but to get there it has to jump through the secondary winding of the coil. This jump multiplies the voltage from a few volts (6V or 12V depending on your system) to upwards of 20,000 - 30,000 volts. That potential causes it to jump the gap in the plug and ignite the compressed gasoline. The top of the coil has a "socket" that the coil wire is inserted into. You can pull it out and replace it into the new coil. Make sure the metal connector is still properly attached to the end of the wire before pushing it into the new coil. There will be somewhat of a "click" when the wire bottoms out in the coil. Then slide the boot back down the wire and over the coil socket. All done. RKS
